(CNN) — A man died after a shooting at a suburban Toronto supermarket Friday night, prompting investigators to issue a warning to anyone who has information that might lead to the arrest of an assailant.
“My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the victims and their families, and the entire Scarborough community,” Toronto Mayor John Tory said.
Friday night’s shooting took place at a Loblaws supermarket in a busy neighborhood in Scarborough. One man, who was among a group of people inside the supermarket, has died, Toronto Police Services spokeswoman Meaghan Gray said early Saturday.
Nine people were treated at hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries. It’s not clear how many victims were inside the store.
One of the injured suffered a wound to the leg, Gray said. The other injured were grazed or shot.
Police are conducting a death investigation, she said.
The investigation is ongoing. No further details were immediately available.
Gray said investigators suspect a confrontation before the shooting began.
Scarborough, located northwest of Toronto, is a largely residential and middle-class neighborhood. It is also home to Air Canada’s headquarters.
According to its website, Loblaws has 48 stores in the city.
In February 2017, a man was charged in connection with a shooting that killed three people and wounded another 14 at a Muslim cemetery in another part of the city.
Police didn’t say whether Friday’s shooting was related to other incidents targeting Muslims.
