Vice President Joe Biden has declared himself the new defender of the environment. He is set to announce in the next two weeks that he intends to ban all new oil and gas drilling inside and around the Chaco Canyon National Park and Preserve in New Mexico.
President Donald Trump announced in late 2017 that the federal government would review all controversial drilling leases in the Chaco Canyon and look to reverse a decades-old ban, which has long been supported by Democrats as well as landowners and conservation groups.
Biden’s plan would block new oil and gas lease sales until the Chaco Canyon Foundation, a nonprofit focused on the Chaco Canyon, submits its “2014 Conservation Plans” to the Bureau of Land Management.
